March 2019 Update: La Pila, Guatemala

Scholarships

GCO continues to support 20 middle school children through our scholarship program. Most of the kids have to walk 45 minutes to get to the school, but they are determined to continue studying. All of them finished the first unit with good grades.

Food Bags

GCO delivers 95 food bags to people in La Pila every month. Each family with kids in school gets a food bag that is used for the family as supplementary feeding. It includes beans, noodles, milk, sugar, among other things.

Widows Group

We continue working with the group of 7 widows from the community. Two of them are working daily preparing breakfasts for the kids. Four of them receive 100 pounds of corn monthly, and one of them raises chickens provided by GCO and sells eggs in order to start a small business.

Breakfasts

For most of the 150 kids who study elementary school in La Pila, GCO has decided to give them a daily breakfast. Kids come to school at 7am and they get a nutritious breakfast in order to start classes at 7:30 am.

Youth Group

We have a monthly meeting on Sundays with kids in middle school to work in areas like spiritual growth, leadership, principles, and values.

Computing Classes

Kids receive a weekly computing class thanks to the support of GCO. Prior to the class, most of the kids had never touched a computer in their entire life.

March Trip

During March, a group of more than 15 people traveled to Guatemala to help in different areas to the village:

1.     Health

Three doctors saw patients and provided free medical treatment

2.     Construction

The whole group paved a street right in front of the school, now the school is going to avoid all of the dirt and dust from outside.

3.     Sunday Service

Dr. Gicheru preached to the entire community and shared some life experiences with them.

4.     Vacation Bible School

Kids had a blast that weekend, practicing baseball, participating in egg hunting, and learning Bible verses.
